Press- briefing on Abolishment of the Death penalty in Uzbekistan and Transfer of the Right to Issue Sanction for Detention to the Courts

On July 12, 2007 the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Brussels has recently held a briefing on the reforms and measures being implemented in Uzbekistan under the direction of President Karimov to liberalise the legal system of the country.

The briefing was attended by the representatives of the socio-political circles of Belgium and the European Union, analytical and research centres, diplomatic missions accredited in Belgium, and media.

The guests of the briefing stressed the importance o the Presidential Decrees "On abolition of the death penalty in the Republic of Uzbekistan" and "On the transfer of the right to issue arrest sanctions to courts" passed on August 2005. They added that the Senate of Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of Uzbekistan has approved the Laws "On introduction of amendments and additions to certain legislative acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan due to the abolition of the death penalty", and "On introduction of amendments and addenda to certain legislative acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan due to the transfer of the right to issue arrest sanctions to courts", which they said was an extension of the reforms taking place in the country.

Briefing participants positively responded and highly appraised the level of legal reforms in Uzbekistan. They emphasized that the initiative of the President in this field was taking the legal system of the country to a quality new level of development.
